SRK’s detention – “uncalled for”

The recent news of Shah Rukh’s detention at the Newark airport for 2 hours because his name is ‘Khan’ is all over the news and goes out to prove the obvious:

1. Racism is still a big problem.
2. Americans (not all) need instructions to open a can of soup.
3. Being a ‘coloured’ human or having a last name of a particular race and ethnicity can get you in trouble (for no reason).

The sinking economy of the US on one hand invites Bollywood to come and shoot movies in their cities in order to promote tourism. And on the other hand they treat our industry folks (guests) in such an embarrassing manner.

It’s also true that many others – diplomats, ex-president of India, other Bollywood stars – have had to face a similar kind of treatment. For example: our ex-president, Mr. Kalam was frisked by an airline staff before boarding a flight to the US.

Our very own Indian spinner Bhajji can’t figure out what the fuss is all about – “I get frisked and checked all the time.”

The news of SRK has the Indian officials so infuriated that a “tit-for-tat” should be done for all Americans coming into India.

How would Americans feel if Obama or Clinton arrive at the airport in India, they are stripped search, and asked to name people they know from India, and also are not be allowed to make phone calls for at least 2 hours. Oh, and, by the way, an apology can be mailed or sent after the whole ordeal is over.

Some US officials are calling the situation as a ‘cultural mismatch,’ where the Indian rich and powerful are known to get out of tight spots by dropping names.

Although such incidents are very common, their isn’t much one can do. And such displays will continue till proper action is taken.

As readers – What do you think about the situation? And how can we counter it in the future?

We can counter it by shouting “Hail Mogambo!” everytime we go abroad. Mogambo is too race-neautral a name and it would confuse everybody anyways. Also, put on some Fair&Lovely when you go to a white country. Be careful not to open your mouth otherwise your terrible accent will give you away.

Also, stop worshipping white skin, start respecting bloack skin and get comfortable in your own one. Will help sirji.

All this news for nothing. We are too used to VIP treatment in our own country. Abdul Kalam didn't protest about his search, when he is a ex-President. Why should SRK?
If the question is about the name 'Khan' – then I agree, that can't be a reason for discriminatory searches.
But there is no merit in the argument that a film-star shouldn't be searched.
As far as we are concerned – rather than kick the Amercian who searched SRK, we should be kicking our own selves for not having the guts to search people coming into India – especially if they are “Names”. Let's start by searching our MLAs, celebs, big-shots etc as we search common people.
First put our own house in order, then crib.

@Rahul Jauhari Thanks for the comments. I agree that we should take this as a learning experience and ensure our forces are as strict. Although, there are a few who don't need such a treatment. Cheers.

And 4… that the Indian media comes across as hyprocritical when it comes to discrimination issues and unequal treatment of citizens: they are hypersensitive when something happens abroad, while not making any fuss about it when it happens within its borders, whereas you could fill a paper a day with stories about the latter…

@Sanne You are absolutely right. At our end, we're not committed and unable to prove ourselves. Yet we are always ahead in criticizing. :-)

APJ Abdul Kalam – one of the most respected Indians alive, cheerfully underwent a frisking. I quote my friend Rahul Jauhari,

“I don’t think we are angry that the Americans had the gall to frisk/search men of fame or stature from our nation.
We are angry that WE don’t have the gall to do the same.”

    Point of view :)

@Naked2Nirvana Welcome to this blog and thanks for your comments. There are several incidents of such frisking and checking that go unnoticed, however, because it was SRK, people got all edgy and a 'tit-for-tat' comment. I think checking is absolutely fine, but there is a thin line between that and harassment.

    For eg.

People and fellow officers were vouching for him, but no heed paid. A well known public figure, such as Shahrukh is like Brad Pitt being frisked at the airport in India or London.

It is also true, in India, the system is incapable of doing something similar. Indians tend to crib more and do less – although, exceptions are always there.

    Cheers.

Do keep coming back for more. :-)

Ti be true if SRK was frisked at Mumbai Airport , the news would be entirely different, it would be something like . Fearless security men frisked and detained SRK… plus all that praise for the security which always fails , however when Americans did the same, they are being ripped left, right and center. WHY SO?

  • http://www.cockybox.com cockybox

@Nitin Vyas Welcome to the site. You see the people are hypocrites and our system is retarded. The only thing people are good at is criticizing. Its pretty obvious what one could expect.
